Our History

  • 1883

    Joe Matje was born in Hungary in 1883. He came to the United States in 1903 at the age of 20. He had $1.10 in his pocket. At the docks a boy hit him up to buy a banana for $0.05 and then ran off with his change. So really Joe started his life in America with $1.00.

  • 1909

    Joe moved to Fort Russell in Cheyenne in 1909 as a shoe repairman. He later opened a shoe repair shop in downtown Cheyenne.

  • 1916

    Joe homesteaded 320 acres converting that $1.00 into a 20,000 acre ranch and farm.

  • 1937

    Joe never married or had children of his own but he gave to the St. Joseph Children’s home in Torrington. He also helped many young farmers and ranchers get started.

    Joe joined the American National Livestock Association in 1937.

  • 1940

    Joe was one of the founding fathers to the South Goshen Conservation District and served on it for 13 years. Dennis joined that same Conservation District board years later.

  • 1948

    Bud Thaler started managing the Fox Creek headquarters in 1948.

  • 1960

    We changed our goal from buying more land to improving what we had and maximizing our natural resources.

  • 1965

    Dennis was raised on the ranch and started working full time in 1965.

  • 2004

    Brandy moved back to the ranch and married Kevin Evans.

  • 2005

    Stock Growers Environmental Stewardship Award Winner.

  • 2006

    NCBA National Environmental Award Winners

  • 2016

    Dennis is inducted into the Wyoming Ag Hall of Fame.

  • 2016

    100 yr centennial farm. We had a big party at the Ranch. Also celebrated Dennis’ 70th birthday.

  • 2017

    In loving Memory of Sandy Thaler.  Sandy passed away after a 7 year battle with cancer.
